The concert under conductor Roberto Abbado in the Sala Grande of Palermo’s Teatro Massimo was a great success. The evening began with Franz Schubert’s “Rosamunde” Overture, D. 644. This was followed by the Concerto for Bassoon and Orchestra K 91 in B flat major by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, featuring bassoon soloist Riccardo Terzo from Palermo. The highly acclaimed performance was rounded off by a Rossinian encore with his father Aldo Terzo, first bassoon of the Orchestra del Teatro Massimo. The concert ended with Gustav Mahler’s Fourth Symphony, featuring the voice of soprano Genia Kühmeier, who interpreted the final movement (“The Heavenly Life”) in an especially captivating manner.
Roberto Abbado, winner of the prestigious Abbiati Award, is Musical Director of the Palau de les Arts Reina Sofía in Valencia and the Verdi Festival in Parma. He was also Director of the Munich Radio Orchestra from 1991 to 1998. He has conducted the most renowned international orchestras and numerous world premieres. He finally returned to Teatro Massimo after his great success with Verdi’s Requiem in 2015.
